China offers an Olympic experience

For those considering going to China or attending the Olympic games, this article offers suggestions based on the experience of the author while traveling and living in China during 2006.

The 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics kick off is August 8. "The Chinese people are very excited," said Qin Showyi, a Chinese student at Peninsula College.

English as a Second Language teacher

David Cowan, English as a Second Language (ESL) professor for Peninsula College, attended PC from 1980 to 1981 for an Associate in Diesel Technology degree. Before coming to the college Cowan had already earned a bachalor degree in teaching. After he finished at PC he went to Kodiak, Alaska, as a mechanic.

PC student dies after seizure

Nick Stuber loved telling stories about his family and those close to him, especially his younger sister and children of his foster siblings. It was clear they meant the world to him and he wasn't afraid to show it.

Nick, a Peninsula College student, died on May 24 at his home in Sequim.

PC's award winning faculty

Eight Peninsula College faculty have been selected to share $32,461 as Exceptional Faculty Awards were announced on June 5 through the Peninsula College Foundation. The award is available to faculty each year on a competitive basis. The foundation was created in 1996, and since then has been working to raise money for such things as student scholarships, student emergency loan funds, faculty enrichment grants, grants for special equipment and athletic programs.

Peninsula College supports K-ply workers' retraining program

The Clallam County Work Source Center is partnering with PC to provide training for workers affected by the closing of the K-ply mill in Port Angeles. Funding is provided through the Department of Labor Workforce Investment Act and Trade Adjustment Assistance Program.

The Clallam County Work Source makes available employment counseling, career assessment, job search workshops, assistance and referrals and computer classes; however there are not a lot of short term training programs. The short term programs available are Commercial Driver License, Aluminum Welding and New Chance-- which is about team building and a variety of academic courses.

Students favor updating PUB computers

Most have seen them, some have walked by or even used them. They are the computers in the internet café in the corner of the Pirate Union Building.

Small lights hang over each computer, a greeting sight as students enter from the north.
They are also, as student Rebecca Horst said, available to Peninsula College students even when the library or computer lab are closed.

Coach Sankey leaving campus

Women's softball coach Heather Sankey announced that she will be leaving Peninsula Colege as of June 30. Sankey said that she is returning to school to pursue her Master Degree in exercise Science and athletic Leadership and that she has been offered a graduate position where she can teach while completing her degree.

Possible Frisbee golf course at PC

The Associated Student Council is considering constructing a Frisbee golf course at Peninsula College.
Frisbee golf-also called disc golf-has been around since the 70s and is played just like regular golf, but with a Frisbee instead of a ball and clubs. You win the game by scoring the least amount of throws of the Frisbee for each hole.

Leung takes grand prize in talent show

PC student Jackal Leung took home the $200 prize Wednesday, June 4, in Peninsula College's final talent show of the year. Leung, one of 9 students who previously placed in one of PC's 3 talent shows this year, performed a montage of background music from the classic Super Mario Bros.

In this new addition to the story, professor/ treasure hunter Jones is kidnapped by Soviet KGB agents.

Tidepools art and literary magazine available now

Torok and friends perform live PC concert

In a live concert at Peninsula College June 7, an audience of almost 100 heard performances by Bill Yates and Friends, Deadwood Revival, and PC's own soulful folk-rock artist Dan Torok, accompanied by fellow PC student and performer, Gabe Hatton.

Each audience member brought items of food and food bank representative, Mickey Saunders, was there to thank everyone for the donations.
